Chapter 1 - In the begining

Verses 1-3– 1-3节

  1. Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2) By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all His work. 3) And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done.

  1. Why did God rest or refrain from continuing His creative work on the seventh day? (verses 1-2)

  3. In verse 3, we learn that God did do something on the seventh day. He began something that He intended to be a source of blessing for all people for all time. He gave a promise of blessed rest. We are not to confuse His action on the seventh day with His centuries-later establishment of a Sabbath Law observance for the people of Israel. God explains this seventh-day blessing for us in Hebrews 4:1-11. The rest God promises is not a physical rest, but the spiritual and eternal rest of salvation which people enter now through faith in the Good News of Jesus Christ. This rest is enjoyed in part here on earth and will be enjoyed in completely and perfectly in heaven. (See Isaiah 57:2 and Revelation 14:13)

Verse 4a– 4a节

4a) This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. 4a)

  1. After God gave us an eloquent overview of creation in Genesis 1:1-2:3, He moves to a new section of Genesis. This will be the first of ten major stories of development that He tells us about in the Book of Genesis. Here God will tell us what would happen next to His young creation.

Verses 4b-7– 4b-7节

4b) When the Lord God made the earth and the heavens - 5) and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not yet sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, 6) but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground - 7) the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

  1. We note that God now uses the name “Lord” (Yahweh in Hebrew) to describe Himself. He added it to the name God (Elohim in Hebrew) that He had already introduced in Genesis 1. The terms “Lord” describes God as the “independent, faithful, loving, merciful Savior who shows undeserved favor to people.”

  3. At this point in the chapter, God takes us back to the sixth day of creation so that He can focus on special events from that time.

  7. Since it had not rained (God may not have sent the first rain on earth until the time of the Flood - Genesis 7), how did God originally provide water for the vegetation of the world? (verses 5-6)

  9. What do we learn about how God specially created the first man in verse 7?

Verses 8-14– 8-14节

  1. Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there He put the man He had formed. 9) And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground - trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10) A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11) The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12) (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) 13) The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. 14) The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Assur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

  3. The word “Eden” means “delight or bliss.” While we know that this wonderful place existed, we do not know its exact location. The Flood at the time of Noah (Genesis 6-8) radically changed the world from its original condition. From the mention of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, many guess that Eden may have been in what is now the region of southeastern Iraq or eastern Turkey. However, we cannot be sure of this.

He brought them to the man to see what He would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20) So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.

So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22) Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib that He had taken out of the man, and He brought her to the man. 23) The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” 24) For this reason a man will leave his father and his mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 25) The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
