God’s Blue Print for Marriage

If you agree with the statement put an “A” in the blank; if you disagree with statement put a “D” in the blank.

—— A successful marriage can only come about when both husband and wife are committed to compromise and sacrifice. .

—— If a wife meets her husband ? the way in a relationship and a husband meets his wife ? the way in a relationship it is a recipe for success.

—— There is no such thing as a happy home, if happiness is defined this way: The absence of disappointment.

—— The recipe for a successful marriage and happy home is when one party, either husband or wife, becomes content within their God-given role in the marriage.

Have you ever worked for a boss that was never happy with your work? How did you handle that situation?

When a husband or wife says or does something that we might not like, how do we tend to handle those situations?

  1. Why don’t we treat our boss like we sometimes handle situations with our husband or wife?

Application: The comfort level that we enjoy with our spouse allows us to at times speak freely without fear of any repercussions. For instance we might think to ourselves, “The boss might fire me if I tell him how I feel but my husband can’t fire me.” So we tend to become bolder in our conversation with our loved ones than we do with our boss at work.

There are lots of reasons why marriages fall apart. But among the top 3 reasons for divorce in America, these 3 rank the highest:

  1. Sex (extra-marital affairs & lack thereof in the home)

  2. Balancing time between children & spouse

  3. Debt or money issues

Keep those three reasons for divorce in the back of your mind as you read about the 3 main blessings that God granted Adam and Eve in the Garden…

clip image007 2

Genesis 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Blessings: 1.

Genesis 2:18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

Blessing: 1.

Application: Please take special note that at the beginning, God intended sex, children, and companionship with each other to be some of the greatest blessings of a marriage. Please take special note on how hard Satan has worked to make those three blessings from God to be the three biggest reasons for divorce.

clip image009 2

Our study today is not intended to fix bad relationships nor is it intended to rekindle the wedding day feelings you may have had long time ago. But rather, this study is meant to take a closer look at the blessings that God wants his children to enjoy inside of marriage for couples about to get married as well as couples who would like to go back to the foundation of marriage to strengthen it. And so we’ll call this study God’s blueprint for marriage.

Consider the difference between a house that was built with a solid plan or blue print and a house that was built with no solid plan or blue print.

clip image012 thumb

Read the words of Jesus…

Matthew 7:24-27 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Consider a marriage that is built upon the solid plan of God’s Word verses a marriage that is built on worldly philosophy and understanding.

God’s Blue Print for Marriage

Ephesians 5:21-33 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church - for we are members of his body. ”For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.“ This is a profound mystery - but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Now let’s take a closer look at the meaning of each section of this blueprint:

”Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord… wives should submit to their husbands in everything“

The same word for submit in Ephesians 5:21 is the same word that Peter uses when he addresses slaves. Read the following…

1 Peter 2:18-21 18 Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. 19 For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God. 20But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

  1. What insight does peter give to us about this word ”submit“?

clip image020 thumb ”For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.“

  2. What kind of headship did Jesus exercise over his church? (Read the following)

Matthew 20:25-28 Jesus called them together and said, ”You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.“

  3. How does Jesus bring ”slavery“ back into the subject as it pertains to leadership?

  4. How can husbands rightfully define their headship over their wife as a type of enslavement to their wife?

Application: The world takes offense at the idea of male headship in the family and in the church; the word that they fail to understand is the word submit. But Jesus talks about the church submitting to Christ and that doesn’t sound offensive to any Christian’s ears because we know that Jesus is there to provide for us in every possible way – physically, emotionally, spiritually etc. And we are able to lean on him and gladly rest ourselves in his provision. With this understanding of submission, we as Christians can also see the submission of a wife to her husband as a beautiful reflection of the church’s relationship to Jesus! In the same way we can also see the servant-like leadership of the husband as a beautiful reflection of Christ’s loving elevation of his bride, the church, whom he enslaved himself to.

Bible History Application of a Christian Marriage

· In Genesis 17, a dramatic transition would take place in the history of our world when one man and one woman, through their offspring, would give future generations the hope of salvation through the seed of their offspring some 2,000 years later when Jesus would be born. Yes, all nations would be blessed through Jesus, but the promise was given to Abraham and Sarah whom both the Old and New Testaments spend a great deal of time talking about for our learning. Let’s look to the Scriptural example of this husband and wife team who were to bring about the Savior of the world and to be an example for all nations to come!

clip image022 2 ”Your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.

15 God also said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.“ (Genesis 17)

Before we examine the family life of Abraham and Sarah’s house, let’s read what the New Testament has to say about Abraham and Sarah.

Hebrews 11:8-11 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. 9 By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11 By faith Abraham, even though he was past age—and Sarah herself was barren—was enabled to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise.

  1. What sort of picture does the New Testament paint regarding the life of Abraham? A good picture or a bad picture?

clip image024 thumb1 Peter 3:1-6 Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. 4 Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

  2. What sort of picture does the New Testament paint regarding the life of Sarah? A good picture or a bad picture?

Meaning: ”You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.“

  3. Can you think of a circumstance or two where Sarah might have been inclined to give way to fear and say, ”No way! Enough is enough, master! You’re not leading if you’re going to lead in this manner!“?

Proverbs 3:25-27 Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared. Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.

A brief summary of Abraham and Sarah’s life as…

    Husband & Wife…Father & Mother

Genesis 12:10-16 Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, ”I know what a beautiful woman you are. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.“ 14 When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that she was a very beautiful woman. 15 And when Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, menservants and maidservants, and camels.

  1. Apply these words of Scripture… do not give way to fear (1 Peter 3:6), as you consider some of the options that Sarah had. She could have…

    a. Disobeyed her husband and refused to listen to his bad advice

    b. Obeyed her husband, and trusted the Lord to protect her even when her husband had failed to do so.

Application: Women and especially wives need to know that God has built us men to be household leaders! But sin so often gets in the way of our leadership skills so that we are inclined and prone to make mistakes. But please don’t give way to fear! Trust God, even when we fail at times, and keep placing your trust back into us to lead and pray to God that he might grant us a rich measure of leadership skills in our decision making process!

Genesis 12:17-20 But the LORD inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram’s wife Sarai. 18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram. ”What have you done to me?“ he said. ”Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!“ 20 Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.

  1. How do you think God felt about Abraham’s leadership skills?

Application: Wives, God didn’t give up on his servant Abraham – nor ought you! When we fail, God picks up his Redeemed ones and gently restores them through the cross of his Son, Jesus Christ – and gives us other opportunities to lead in a God-pleasing way! If a husband can go forth by God’s grace after making a terrible decision – then he ought to be able to go forth with the confidence of his wife as well. Remember – ”Don’t give way to fear.“

    · After Abram received the promise from God that ”from his own body, an heir would come forth,“ a frustrated Sarai, who was well along in years began to think that God couldn’t possibly use her dried up womb to produce a son. So what does she do next? Read the following…

Genesis 16:1, 2 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar; 2 so she said to Abram, ”The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her.“

  1. How do you suppose Abram felt about this request from his wife?

Genesis 16:3, 4 Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.

  1. Does this event remind you of a certain someone who gave their husband a piece of fruit and he ate it? We might say that Adam exercised poor judgment and greatly lacked leadership when he listened to his wife and ate the fruit. How did Abram exercise poor judgment and poor leadership?

Genesis 16:4-5 When she [Sarai] knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, ”You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my servant in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me.“

    · In Chapter 17 of Genesis, God comes back to Abram and reaffirms his promise to make him into a great nation and then changes the name of his wife Sarai to Sarah. What sort of princess? ”Mother of nations“ ”kings and nations of people will come from her.“clip image028 2

  2. In a Christian marriage, how does God reaffirm his promises to us?

    · After Sarah overheard the angel of the Lord tell Abraham that this time next year she would have a child (Sarah was 90 and her husband was 99), the Bible tells us that she laughed, saying, ”After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?“ (Genesis 18:12)。 But God confronted her sinful doubting of God’s promise and said…

  1. Who thinks Abraham and Sarah need marriage counseling?

    · As so often is the case in life, when we make a poor decision or judgment, God often allows another opportunity to come into our life to try again with his help to make a better decision. Read the following…

Genesis 20:1-7 1 Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar, 2 and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, ”She is my sister.“ Then Abimelech king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her. 3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream one night and said to him, ”You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.“ 4 Now Abimelech had not gone near her, so he said, ”Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation? 5 Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister,’ and didn’t she also say, ‘He is my brother‘? I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands.“ 6 Then God said to him in the dream, ”Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her. 7 Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all yours will die.“

  1. How do you think Sarah felt this time about her husband’s decision?

  2. How do you think God felt about Abraham’s decision making?

Application: God never gives up on his own! Let that same resolve enter the lives of Christian husbands and wives as they do their best to practice Christ like leadership and Christ like service in their households. Failure will accompany your efforts because of sin! But God will restore you by his grace, pick you up off of the ground, and strengthen you by his Almighty Power.

clip image030 2Genesis 21:1-7 Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised. 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 Sarah said, ”God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about

this will laugh with me.“ 7 And she added, ”Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.“

Application: King Solomon wrote, ”There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance“ (Ecclesiastes 3:1,4)。 God grants peace, love, and joy in marriage – but sin has caused the joys that God intends for husbands and wives to enjoy to become disrupted by the self-centeredness of our own sinful hearts. However, sorrow and mourning can also be an opportunity for God’s children to rejoice in the forgiveness that is there’s through Jesus Christ so that even in the midst of sorrow, we can weep with heavenly joy at what is to come for those who have faith in Jesus Christ.

  1. How had Sarah’s decision about giving Hagar to Abraham effected their family life?

    · The greatest test in Abraham’s life was now about to come. The Bible is silent about whether or not Abraham told his wife about this next test, my suspicion is that he did not tell her, but not because he was afraid she would stop him, but because Abraham’s faith had become so strong in God that he knew that even if God allowed him to go through with the killing of his son that God had the ability to raise him back from the dead.

clip image033 thumbGenesis 22:1-19 1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.” 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of

them went on together. 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.” 15 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” 19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

· Consider the insight that the New Testament gives to us regarding Abraham’s conviction that even if he had to kill Isaac, he knew God would raise him from the dead.

Hebrews 11:17-19 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” 19 Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death.

  1. Why do you suppose the New Testament leaves out the failures and sins of both Abraham and his wife Sarah when portraying their lives to us?

    Psalm 103:11-13 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;

  2. Why aren’t there any traces in the New Testament that Abraham and his wife Sarah had a difficult marriage?

Colossians 3:3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

  3. What can we learn from father Abraham and the Mother of nations and kings?

    · Marriage is built on Forgiveness, mutual trust, and confidence in our God that he will bless and preserve us in his grace till death do we part!
