Have you ever worked for a boss that was never happy with your work? How did you handle that situation?

Application: The comfort level that we enjoy with our spouse allows us to at times speak freely without fear of any repercussions. For instance we might think to ourselves, “The boss might fire me if I tell him how I feel but my husband can’t fire me.” So we tend to become bolder in our conversation with our loved ones than we do with our boss at work.

Application: Please take special note that at the beginning, God intended sex, children, and companionship with each other to be some of the greatest blessings of a marriage. Please take special note on how hard Satan has worked to make those three blessings from God to be the three biggest reasons for divorce.

Our study today is not intended to fix bad relationships nor is it intended to rekindle the wedding day feelings you may have had long time ago. But rather, this study is meant to take a closer look at the blessings that God wants his children to enjoy inside of marriage for couples about to get married as well as couples who would like to go back to the foundation of marriage to strengthen it. And so we’ll call this study God’s blueprint for marriage.

Ephesians 5:21-33 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church - for we are members of his body. ”For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.“ This is a profound mystery - but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

1 Peter 2:18-21 18 Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. 19 For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God. 20But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

How does Jesus bring ”slavery“ back into the subject as it pertains to leadership?

How can husbands rightfully define their headship over their wife as a type of enslavement to their wife?

Application: The world takes offense at the idea of male headship in the family and in the church; the word that they fail to understand is the word submit. But Jesus talks about the church submitting to Christ and that doesn’t sound offensive to any Christian’s ears because we know that Jesus is there to provide for us in every possible way – physically, emotionally, spiritually etc. And we are able to lean on him and gladly rest ourselves in his provision. With this understanding of submission, we as Christians can also see the submission of a wife to her husband as a beautiful reflection of the church’s relationship to Jesus! In the same way we can also see the servant-like leadership of the husband as a beautiful reflection of Christ’s loving elevation of his bride, the church, whom he enslaved himself to.

Bible History Application of a Christian Marriage

· In Genesis 17, a dramatic transition would take place in the history of our world when one man and one woman, through their offspring, would give future generations the hope of salvation through the seed of their offspring some 2,000 years later when Jesus would be born. Yes, all nations would be blessed through Jesus, but the promise was given to Abraham and Sarah whom both the Old and New Testaments spend a great deal of time talking about for our learning. Let’s look to the Scriptural example of this husband and wife team who were to bring about the Savior of the world and to be an example for all nations to come!

Before we examine the family life of Abraham and Sarah’s house, let’s read what the New Testament has to say about Abraham and Sarah.

What sort of picture does the New Testament paint regarding the life of Sarah? A good picture or a bad picture?

Meaning: ”You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.“

Can you think of a circumstance or two where Sarah might have been inclined to give way to fear and say, ”No way! Enough is enough, master! You’re not leading if you’re going to lead in this manner!“?

Proverbs 3:25-27 Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared. Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.

Genesis 12:10-16 Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, ”I know what a beautiful woman you are. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.“ 14 When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that she was a very beautiful woman. 15 And when Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, menservants and maidservants, and camels.

Application: Women and especially wives need to know that God has built us men to be household leaders! But sin so often gets in the way of our leadership skills so that we are inclined and prone to make mistakes. But please don’t give way to fear! Trust God, even when we fail at times, and keep placing your trust back into us to lead and pray to God that he might grant us a rich measure of leadership skills in our decision making process!

Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!“ 20 Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.

How do you think God felt about Abraham’s leadership skills?

Application: Wives, God didn’t give up on his servant Abraham – nor ought you! When we fail, God picks up his Redeemed ones and gently restores them through the cross of his Son, Jesus Christ – and gives us other opportunities to lead in a God-pleasing way! If a husband can go forth by God’s grace after making a terrible decision – then he ought to be able to go forth with the confidence of his wife as well. Remember – ”Don’t give way to fear.“

Application: King Solomon wrote, ”There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance“ （Ecclesiastes 3:1,4）。 God grants peace, love, and joy in marriage – but sin has caused the joys that God intends for husbands and wives to enjoy to become disrupted by the self-centeredness of our own sinful hearts. However, sorrow and mourning can also be an opportunity for God’s children to rejoice in the forgiveness that is there’s through Jesus Christ so that even in the midst of sorrow, we can weep with heavenly joy at what is to come for those who have faith in Jesus Christ.
