Lesson 3 Suicide

clip-image002

03China has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, particularly among rural women.

Yang Fude, vice-president of Beijing Hui Long Guan Hospital, said China is the only country where suicides among women outnumber men.

“It is also one of the few countries where rural suicides outnumber urban suicides,” he said on World Suicide Prevention Day.

Recent statistics show more than 287,000 people end their own lives every year on the Chinese mainland.

Stress and depression cause 70 to 80 percent of suicides in urban areas, where many of those afflicted jump off buildings, according to data released by the Beijing Suicide Research and Prevention Center.

Half of the suicides on the mainland are of women in rural areas, who commonly drink pesticide to end their lives. They may do so because of family disputes, low-educational levels and restricted social communication.

Though suicide ranks fifth after cerebrovascular diseases (such as a stroke), bronchitis, chronic emphysema, liver cancer and pneumonia, it is the leading cause of death for people aged between 15 and 34.

A two-year survey by researchers at Peking University found over 20 percent of 140,000 high-school students interviewed said they had considered committing suicide. And 6.5 percent of the students surveyed said they had made plans to kill themselves.

Our study from God’s Word today will not only open us up to the fact that suicide is a real problem in this world, but hopefully will give Christians greater insight regarding God’s Word as it relates to suicide and how we might counsel those who are considering it.

Suicide is murder according to the Bible

clip image005 thumbGenesis 9:6 “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.

  1. Why does God place such a tough penalty on those who commit murder?

  2. Why is suicide a form of murder?

Romans 1:28-32 28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

  1. What must we understand about a person who is either willing to commit suicide or someone who has committed suicide regarding their relationship with God?

  2. Which one of the Lord’s apostles committed suicide?

clip image007 2 b4288831f32482797b80f3887c709689Matthew 27:3-5 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. 4 ”I have sinned,“ he said, ”for I have betrayed innocent blood.“ ”What is that to us?“ they replied. ”That’s your responsibility.“ 5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

John 17:12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

John 6:70,71 Then Jesus replied, ”Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!“ 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)

· Whether a person is trying to escape the pains of this life and knows not Jesus, or whether they knew Jesus, but no longer trusted his love and forgiveness for them (like Judas), it is only a myth that one escapes any pain at all – because life outside of this world places us into an eternity in the world to come! This is why it is vitally important that we reach the lost with the message of hope and comfort that Jesus loves the unlovable and he deeply cares for each of us and wants to spend eternity with us in the kingdom of heaven. The following Bible story illustrates just one sort of man – who went from near suicide to receiving the gift of salvation the same night.

clip image009 thumb 4bdfe3724fe2eb73947b9a704d87f2feActs 16:22-34 The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten. 23 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24 Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, ”Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!“ 29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, ”Sirs, what must I do to be saved?“ 31 They replied, ”Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.“ 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole family.

  1. How had Paul saved this man’s life?

  2. How only can we save the lives of those who are trying to escape life’s problems?

Job 1:21 ”Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.“

· Life was given as a gift from God and it’s for him to decide when that earthly life comes to an end, not us! End of life issues that pertain to life support will be prayerfully considered by the family, and maybe the pastor or close spiritual advisors. But ”pulling the plug“ as they say in America must never be for the reason that we’re trying to escape the life that God granted us here on earth. He will give us the strength to endure whatever affliction we might have to endure.

1 Corinthians 3:16, 17 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

· As Martin Luther said in his small catechism, ”Not with gold or silver, but with the innocent blood of Jesus“ we were bought back and redeemed from the corruption of this world that leads to eternal disaster. If we’re owned by Christ then suicide cannot be an option for the Christian – no matter how difficult life might become.

Hebrews 12:4-7 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: ”My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.“ 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons.

· Keeping our eyes on the prize (heaven through faith in Jesus Christ) will help us get through the difficult days where we might otherwise feel like giving up. Accepting the Lord’s hand of discipline in our life is never easy, but it is always necessary. As the writer states, we are being treated as heirs or sons of heaven.

1 Timothy 4:12-16 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

· Paul reminds a young pastor, by the name of Timothy that perseverance is to be one of the trademarks of the Christian faith. The world is watching how we suffer and there ought to be a distinct difference between the way Christians suffer and the suffering of unbelievers because their suffering is without hope and ours is not without hope, but with the confidence that our Savior is there with us (Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you)。

clip image010 thumbRomans 8:28, 31-32 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

· A Continual reminder to each child of God – God gave up what was most precious and dear to him – his own Son, so that we could have life through his work! Let that be a continual reminder to each of us of just how our Father in heaven feels about us his children.

Psalm 49:7-9 No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him— 8 the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough— 9 that he should live on forever and not see decay.

· Suicide victims are not concerned about the eternal welfare of their soul and future resurrection, but are only concerned about escaping the pain of this life that seems to outweigh their ability to cope with that pain. God sees us with eternal value and as his children we must continue to see our eternal value in his great plan for us in heaven.

Matthew 16:26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

· So many in this world think that life is about making a living, and often that entails a living of comfort and ease that is relatively painless. All the while, their efforts in making a good, comfortable life here on earth in many instances has caused them to neglect the one thing needful and that is making a life with Jesus, the Redeemer of our soul. When the Christian finds that there is eternal value in his life – he will also begin to find earthly value in whatever position of life he finds himself in – wealthy, poor, handicapped etc.

Conclusion

结论

As God’s children, let us always remember that if we seek God’s kingdom first, ”all of these things [necessities of life - Matthew 6:25] shall be given to us as well“ (Matthew 6:33)。 Paul tells us in Philippians 2:12-16 that God works in us. He did not say all would be good, but it can work together for good (Romans 8:28)。

Suicide is never a solution for the child of God! One may say, ”I cannot go on – I’m going to end it all!“ But it is not the end. We will continue to exist and must answer to God in eternity (2 Corinthians 5:10)。 The best way to end unbearable suffering and pain is to be faithful in submission and obedience to God and go to Heaven where these things will be absent from us forever.

Revelation 7:14-17 I answered, ”Sir, you know.“ And he said, ”These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore, “they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them. 16 Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Revelation 21:1-4 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
