Lesson 8 Marriage, Divorce, & Remarriage

The following lesson will explore the following issues…

1) Foundation

2) Divorce and remarriage in the Old Testament

3) Why does God hate divorce?

4) Remarriage according to Paul?

5) Must spiritual discipline be carried out in EVERY case of divorce?

6) Seeing the divorced through the eyes of Jesus

The Christian response to this common problem in our world’s society (divorce and remarriage) must begin where Jesus began on the subject and that is with the institution of marriage.

Matthew 19:8,9 “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

  1. When Jesus states, “It wasn’t this way from the beginning,” what is he referring to?

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Genesis 2:24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 教牧学8-2 and they will become one flesh.

What does it mean when the Bible says, “leaving his father and mother?”

  1. What does it mean when the Bible states, “And they will become one flesh?”

1 Corinthians 6:16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”

Application: It’s very important that people understand that when they enter into a contractual relationship with each other as husband and wife, they are entering into an establishment that our God created and instituted. When man and woman desire to come into such a union that God has designed, they must be fully aware of the commitment required of them by God, which is designed to be life-long.

Divorce and Remarriage in the Old Testament

Deuteronomy 24:1-4 If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he 教牧学8-3 finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, 2 and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, 3 and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, 4 then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

Application: Moses doesn’t actually permit divorce, but we might say that he tries to mitigate (soften) the damage caused by sin in the homes of people whose hearts have become hardened by sin. This is the point of Jesus when he responded to those in his day who argued that Moses “gave a permit” for divorce. Jesus said, “It wasn’t this way from the beginning.” So it’s also important that we understand that what might be considered legal still might not be considered moral in God’s sight.

From the Old Testament law, we learn that the sanctity of the marriage must be carefully guarded. Read the following…

Jeremiah 7:9-11 “‘Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, 10and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, ”We are safe“—safe to do all these detestable things? 11 Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching! declares the LORD.

  1. What was the attitude of the people of Jeremiah’s day in regards to their sin?

Jeremiah 23:9-11 Concerning the prophets: My heart is broken within me; all my bones tremble. I am like a drunken man, like a man overcome by wine, because of the LORD and his holy words. 10 The land is full of adulterers; because of the curse the land lies parched and the pastures in the desert are withered. The prophets follow an evil course and use their power unjustly. 11 ”Both prophet and priest are godless; even in my temple I find their wickedness,“ declares the LORD.

  1. What was going on in Israel during the days of Jeremiah (roughly 600 B.C.)?

Consider some of these statistics in America:

· 42% of children are born outside of wedlock

· 7 out of 10 couples today live together before getting married

· 1 in every 2 couples getting married will get a divorce (That number would dramatically increase if you counted the break-ups of those who chose to live together before marriage)

· Gay marriage is very close to becoming a law in this country enabling homosexuals to be married

· Several Christian church bodies have sanctioned their church body to allow pastors to lead their respective churches with homosexual pastors

Perhaps the time-period we find ourselves in America is not much different from the time-period of Israel in the 5th & 6th century B.C.

Let’s consider for a moment why the penalty for adultery was so severe. Read the following…

Deuteronomy 22:22-24 If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. 23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the girl because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.

There is hardly Scriptural evidence that the severity of this penalty was actually ever carried out, except for just one instance. Numbers chapter 25 shares with us an account where 24,000 Israelites die as a direct judgment of God against Israel for both sexual immorality and idolatry. And in that account, we are told that Phinehas drove a spear through Zimri (an Israelite) who was having sex with Cozbi (a Midianite), killing both of them. And the result of this act of Phinehas, the LORD said to Moses…

Numbers 25:11-13 ”Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger 教牧学8-4 away from the Israelites; for he was as zealous as I am for my honor among them, so that in my zeal I did not put an end to them. Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him. He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.“

Application: However, King David serves as just one of many examples in the Old Testament where adultery was forgiven by God and not punished by death. When David slept with another man’s wife (Bathsheba), there were several earthly consequences to his sin, but nonetheless God’s full and free forgiveness for the sin was also granted to him through the prophet Nathan. We have far more examples in the Old Testament where adultery was forgiven than we do examples of adultery being a death sentence for the people of God as God had threatened them in the law. However, this is not meant to negate or minimize the seriousness of this sin just because we have more examples of the sin being absolved than the sin being punished.

Malachi 2:16 ”I hate divorce,“ says the LORD God of Israel.

  1. Besides the fact that God instituted the family, can you think of some other reasons why God takes great displeasure in the breakup of the family?

Application: One only needs to look at the account of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar to see the example of why multiple families and blended families experience tremendous difficulty in life. Or a person could look at the example of Joseph and his older brothers who hated him because his dad loved him the best because Joseph was the first-born of his favorite wife, Rachel. Sibling rivalry and spousal rivalry, jealousy and anger emerge out of divorced homes almost as a natural consequence to the sin.

  1. What are we to conclude from the Old Testament’s treatment of the subject of divorce and remarriage?

Application: Christian partners in marriage aren’t merely bound to the covenant because they made a promise to each other, but rather, because they have made a promise to God. Reverence for their Creator, therefore, and love for his establishment of the family will cause us to do all that we can to save the marriage – no matter how bad it might appear to be.

The Teaching of Jesus

Matthew 5:27-32 (portion of the Sermon on the Mount)

27 ”You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

  1. Where does all adultery begin?

  1. Is Jesus encouraging us to self-mutilate our body if we can’t control it?

  1. Divorce

31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divo rced woman commits adultery.

  1. Why does Jesus say, ”Except for marital unfaithfulness“ (think of what was said in the Garden of Eden when God first instituted marriage)?

  1. Why would a man who divorces his wife cause her to become the adulteress?

Application: It’s important that we understand the context of our Lord’s words. In Jewish society, not much unlike the society of Moses’ day, the people sought legal approval for divorce and remarriage and Jesus is simply saying that none of this was in the plans of God’s original intent back in the garden. And this is very applicable for us today, especially in America because the divorce rate is so high even among Christians that it becomes very easy for a Christian to seek divine approval for their actions, but just because the courts permit a divorce does not mean that our God approves of the dissolving of a marriage.

The Teaching of the Apostle Paul

The spread of the Gospel to the Gentile world and the creation of new Christian congregations on Gentile soil gave rise to questions calling for pastoral care and judgment that were not specifically addressed by Jesus. The existence of mixed marriages, in which a Christian had a non-Christian spouse, was one of those questions. We are fortunate to have in hand a specific pastoral application of the Lord’s principles on divorce and remarriage written by the apostle Paul to the church at Corinth. While Paul addresses the topic of marriage elsewhere, it is principally to 1 Cor.7:10-16 that we must look to learn what the apostle taught regarding divorce and remarriage.

1 Cor. 7:10-16

To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.12 To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let him do so. A believing man or woman is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace. 16 How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

  1. If marriage between a Christian and non-Christian was to be a life-long union between the two, what does that tell us about marriage both inside and outside of Christendom?

  1. What two choices are given to the husband and wife who are having troubles?

It would appear from the Bible that aside from adultery, the only other Biblical cause for divorce would be desertion. But due to the sinful world that we live in, there are many sub-points to both desertion and adultery…far too many to discuss in this Bible study. But just to name a few, pornography might be one such sub point to adultery, or physical abuse might be a form of desertion. Divorce is an ugly monster and nobody wins in the dissolving of God’s institution.

Applying the Gospel to Marriage, divorce, and remarriage

John 4

7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, ”Will you give me a drink?“ 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, ”You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?“ (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, ”If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.“11 ”Sir,“ the woman said, ”you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?“13 Jesus answered, ”Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.“15 The woman said to him, ”Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.“16 He told her, ”Go, call your husband and come back.“17 ”I have no husband,“ she replied. Jesus said to her, ”You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.“19 ”Sir,“ the woman said, ”I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.“21 Jesus declared, ”Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.“25 The woman said, ”I know that Messiah“ (called Christ) ”is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.“26 Then Jesus declared, ”I who speak to you am he.“

1.How did Jesus apply the law to this woman’s heart

  1. How did he apply the gospel to this woman’s heart

Application: Never, never, never neglect the divorced or the spiritually weak as though somehow they are second rate Christians. That’s not how our Lord treated this woman who had had 5 failed marriages and the man she was currently living with

was not her husband. He loved her with an everlasting love and even offered her water that would never make her thirst again! This account ought to serve as a reminder to each of us of the temptation of becoming self-righteous when dealing with some of the ugly marriages that confront us in the church. We must not dismiss divorce as though it isn’t a big deal, but we also must know when it is time to apply the living water of Jesus to those thirsty souls who have made a mess out of their lives.

1 Corinthians 5:1-5

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans: A man has his father’s wife. 2And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this? 3 Even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. And I have already passed judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present. 4 When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, 5 hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.

  1. What does it mean to ”hand over to Satan“?

  1. Why would we hand someone over to Satan?

2 Corinthians 2:6-8 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him. 7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.

  1. What’s the danger if the church treats this man who has repented of his sin different from the other members?

Application: Every Christian is at a different level of faith, some are weaker than others and some might have no faith at all. We can expect the devil to interrupt the flow of the family because the devil wants nothing more than to lead souls away from God. We must apply both the law and the gospel to every broken marriage and be sure not to overwhelm souls with excessive sorrow when they’re ready to return to the flock.

1 Timothy 1:12-17 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Application: When our Lord came to this earth, he never committed adultery; he never even looked教牧学8-11 at a woman lustfully. He was perfectly obedient to even this law of our Father in heaven…something no man has ever perfectly fulfilled. As our substitute, Jesus lived in the place of adulterers and adulteresses, and when he gave up his life on the cross, he forgave the sins of all people including those who have been married and divorced multiple times in life. God’s grace is not to invoke a spirit of care-free living in the

hearts of children, but rather a spirit of reverence and deepest respect and honor as we strive to please him with our bodies through God’s strength , knowing full-well that he will bless us and give to us the strength to overcome the sins of our flesh.
