Our Bible study today is not meant to be a medical study on the various forms of depression that doctors have diagnosed. But rather, it’s simply to give hope to those in life who have found that there are times when life looks uncertain. May God bless our study.

Every human being has experienced what this person in the picture is going through. Maybe it was a grade you received from a teacher where you failed and others saw that you failed and laughed; maybe it was the breakup of a boy friend or girl friend; maybe it was the disappointment of a parent promising to do something for us but they never did.

Maybe the very thing that is different between the clinically depressed and those of us who experience days of depression are that the clinically depressed experience this hopeless and helpless feeling without ever coming out of the feeling. In other words, the nightmare for them just seems to keep on going. The past is relived over and over again in their mind so that it immobilizes them and disrupts their eating habits and disrupts their sleep patterns. Consider this on-going nightmare as the Bible introduces us to a man named Joseph.

Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.wps-clip-image-190043 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.5 Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”8 His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Sometimes we become the cause of our own hopeless situation; other times it may be others whom we have no control over that might be the cause of our depressed days. Joseph serves as an example to us of both internal and external causes of some of the depressing days that lay ahead for him.

Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”21 When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said. 22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the desert, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the richly ornamented robe he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it.25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? 27 Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.28 So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

31 Then they got Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.

36 Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.

Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife

1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there. 2 The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.

6…Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!” 8 But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

Joseph’s troubles would not end while in prison. For he was betrayed by the chief cup bearer who promised to tell Pharaoh about his ability to interpret dreams and had to remain in prison much longer as a result. But eventually, Joseph would get out of prison, and eventually be elevated into Pharaoh’s household as 2nd in command of all Egypt, the world power at that time. It was there, that Joseph would finally get to see the fulfillment of his initial dreams that he shared with his brothers and parents. Due to a severe famine in the land, his brothers were forced to confront the leading commander of Egypt – their brother. And eventually Joseph would reveal himself to them with great tears of joy. Joseph’s brothers, who still lacked a strong faith, thought that Joseph would certainly imprison or even kill them for their actions. But Joseph demonstrates to us how the hand of God was always involved in every event throughout his earthly life by saying, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. 21 So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children. And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them” （Genesis 50:19-21）。

As Christians, we know that God is with us, but sometimes the feeling of hopelessness is so intense that we might describe the feeling as being sort of desperate. True hopelessness is the expectation that nothing good could possibly happen, but that the painful experiences that we are going through will just go on and on and on. And when we feel like all hope is gone, we start to wonder to ourselves if our God is good, or if he cares at all about our current situation. Let’s consider the following verses in Scripture and determine where our real hope is found.

The day of our Lord’s crucifixion was perhaps the most hopeless day for all of his followers. For they had looked to him to be their leader, both physically here on earth, as well as spiritually with God. But the cross of Jesus initially brought great disappointment for all who watched how he was brutally tortured and put to death. Let’s revisit that day with our Lord’s followers and reflect on the circumstances of what is called Good Friday.

He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, ”Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.“50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. 52 The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus’ resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people. 54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, ”Surely he was the Son of God!“55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

1. Jesus’ followers witnessed the religious leaders and criminals mocking Jesus as he was dying, saying, ”He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him.“ But God didn’t rescue him. In fact, Jesus cried out to God, ”Why have you forsaken me?“ As a witness to the crucifixion, what might your reaction to these events be?

Personal reflection

Years ago, a professor at the seminary once told his class of students about going out into the ministry that there would be days when you feel all alone. And that there would be days when you would wonder if you should even be a pastor or a spiritual leader of God’s people. He suggested that when those days soon come that we remember the certificate that we received from our church that says, ”Divine call.“ His point was that even though the body of believers calls pastors to publicly teach and proclaim the gospel to them that it was God who worked through his people to bring about that ”divine call“ into the ministry. Man doesn’t put us where we are in life, God does, and that ought to be a comfort for anyone who struggles with hopelessness in life.
